Where to find a hangar near Calgary
Every airport in this area handles hangar land differently. Some lease the land, one sells titled lots, and a few sell hangars as condo units. Here's how they compare.
| Airport | Code | Distance from downtown Calgary | Longest runway | How the land is held | What you'll find |
| Springbank | CYBW | 15 km west | 5,000 ft paved | Leased from the Calgary Airport Authority | Most private, flight-school and helicopter hangars; condo bays |
| Calgary International | CYYC | NE Calgary | 14,000 ft paved | Leased airport land | Large airline, cargo and maintenance hangars |
| High River Regional | CEN4 | About 65 km south | 4,300 ft | Sublease from High River Regional Airport Ltd. | Mid-size hangars and maintenance shops, aviation use only |
| Okotoks Air Ranch | CFX2 | About 45 km south | Closed to fixed-wing aircraft since 2021 | Condo-titled hangar units | Existing hangar buildings; helicopter and drone use |
| Airdrie | CEF4 | About 35 km north | 5,000 ft paved | Private airpark (Airdrie Airpark Ltd.) | Small private hangars |
| Olds-Didsbury | CEA3 | About 90 km north | 4,000 ft paved | County airport, some titled lots | Newer private hangars, a few with living suites |
| Red Deer Regional | CYQF | About 145 km north | 7,500 ft paved | Long-term airside leases | Serviced land for build-to-suit hangars |
| Lethbridge | CYQL | About 210 km southeast | 6,500 ft paved | City airport leases | Hangar development under study |
Springbank Airport (YBW)
Springbank is where most hangar buyers near Calgary end up looking. It's a 15-minute drive from the west end of the city, it has a 5,000 ft main runway and a 3,423 ft crosswind runway, and it's a Canada Border Services Agency airport of entry for small general aviation aircraft, so you can clear customs coming back from the U.S. without stopping at YYC. Flight schools, helicopter operators and the Alberta wildfire tanker base all work out of here.
The hangar stock is mostly older and plain. CoStar rates 44 of the 61 Springbank buildings it tracks as Class C. Streets like Hurricane Drive, Maclaurin Drive, Noorduyn Park and Avro Lane are lined with hangars from the 1980s to 2000s, many split into condo bays of 1,500 to 4,000 sq ft. Land is leased from the Calgary Airport Authority, and because it's federal land, a new hangar build goes through a federal environmental-effects review before it can start. A 16,000 sq ft, three-bay hangar proposed on Lot 97 went through public comment in August and September 2025.
Calgary International (YYC)
The hangars around YYC, along Aviation Park, McTavish Road, Palmer Road and Aero Way NE, are commercial buildings. The median one CoStar tracks is about 45,000 sq ft, and the biggest pass 200,000 sq ft. They suit charter operators, maintenance companies and cargo businesses. A private owner with one piston aircraft will pay more and get less here than at Springbank, and landing fees and ramp access work differently at a major airport.
High River Regional Airport
High River's airport is owned by the Town of High River and Foothills County and run by a not-for-profit, High River Regional Airport Ltd. Hangar lots are subleased, and every new sublease needs sign-off from the airport board, Foothills County and the Town, followed by a county development permit. The zoning (Direct Control District #5) limits hangars to aviation use, so this isn't the place to park an RV collection. Expect an application fee for an undeveloped lot and a construction deposit that's refunded after final inspection; ask the airport for the current amounts. The 4,300 ft runway sits about 2.5 nautical miles southeast of town.
Okotoks Air Ranch
The privately run airfield just outside Okotoks closed its runway to fixed-wing aircraft in 2021, and since then only helicopter and drone operators can use it. The hangar buildings are still there and are held as condo units, and some of the multi-bay buildings have 60-foot bi-fold doors and 3-phase power. It can suit a helicopter operator or someone who needs secure storage. If you fly fixed-wing, check the airfield's current status before you buy here.
Airdrie Airport
The Airdrie airport is a private airpark run by Airdrie Airpark Ltd., with a 5,000 ft paved runway. It has a handful of private hangars, about 5,000 to 6,600 sq ft each. It's a sensible pick if you live in north Calgary or Airdrie and fly a light single.
Olds-Didsbury Airport
Mountain View County owns this airport, and the Olds-Didsbury Flying Association runs it. It's one of the few places in Alberta where you can buy titled land under your hangar: a titled lot near the terminal was listed in 2026 at $175,000, with power at the lot line and water and sewer left for the buyer to install. Some newer hangars here include a finished living suite. The county has a plan for a new hangar area west of the existing buildings, to be built in phases once enough tenants commit.
Red Deer Regional Airport
The Red Deer Regional Airport has the most open land of any airport on this list, about 800,000 square metres of serviced airside and groundside parcels offered on long-term leases, with build-to-suit options and no airport improvement fee. It expanded its terminal in 2024 and is extending Airport Drive in 2026. If you need a large custom hangar and can live 90 minutes north of Calgary, this is worth a call.
Lethbridge and southern Alberta
South of Calgary, hangars come up at Lethbridge, Claresholm, Fort Macleod, Pincher Creek, Vulcan and other municipal airports, but not often. Lethbridge Airport is studying hangar development, from T-hangars for private aircraft to larger commercial buildings, on close to 900 acres of developable land. If you're flying out of the south, I'd put alerts on and wait for something to come up.
